The atmosphere after a successful office relocation can be pretty hectic for all parties involved. For the management, there is increased stress in handling employee concerns and corporate objectives in a new space. For employees, there is the stress of commuting to a different area and learning where everything is placed in a new building.
Indeed, each group in your organization will be sensitive in different ways to the new office environment. This can lead to feelings of the workplace as a whole being out of control or unbalanced. In fact, these feelings can still be present even when the overall office move was relatively short or only covered a small distance. Thankfully, there are three main steps to restoring order after an office move.
First, you will want to make sure that all the security measures that were present at the old office location are present at the new one. This seems like a small and rather obvious step to take, but employees of all levels care tremendously about feeling safe in any environment. Taking visible steps to maintain and even expand security measures can send the right message to the staff that the company does deeply care about the concerns of all parties involved with the smooth operation of the office. Keeping a strong focus on security means not only making sure that all the locks and security alarms work as required, but also making sure that there are plenty of working fire alarms as well. After all, security is a comprehensive subject and having the proper emergency response mechanisms in place from the beginning can make many people feel much safer than they did previously.
Next, you will want to hold a meeting and go over the general aspects of the move to remind all staff members of the positive benefits of the office relocation. While this isn't a required step by any stretch of the imagination, it can help soothe overall feelings of resentment that a relocation was required in the first place. Many employees can feel slighted if they've been forced to make a longer commute without knowing why such a change was required in the first place.
Finally, you will want to review corporate policies and ensure that all staff members are reminded of all important company policies. Sometimes people can end up using the chaos of an office relocation to attempt to do things that they know would not be permissible under normal conditions. By making it a general policy review session, you avoid appearing to cast blame onto any one person -- exactly the very thing that you want to avoid. If your company is known for a very casual work environment, you may want to keep the general policy review session casual as well.
All things considered, restoring order after an office move isn't difficult at all. What's required is a little careful planning and a willingness to be proactive. By taking these steps, you will be able to help build a solid office from the beginning which will benefit the organization for many months to come!
